Black Mirror

From the depths of Charlie Brooker's brain comes a darkly satirical miniseries called 'Black Mirror'. Each of the three episodes feature a different cast, setting and cinematography style which explore our relationship and rapidly escalating dependency on technology, social media and consumerism. Coupled with the willingness of the  general populations to be spoon fed and distracted by their government and the media (reality television, modern day celebrity, filtered news coverage etc.) Brooker examines the idea that "If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side-effects?"

The series was produced by Zeppotron for Endemol, who ironically are the production and distribution company behind 'Big Brother' a reality show based on a group of people living together; isolated from the outside world but with every move and word continuously watched and recorded by television cameras.

I found myself watching Black Mirror with a nagging sense of unease. Brooker elaborates "This area – between delight and discomfort – is where Black Mirror, my new drama series, is set...The present day is no less crazy. We routinely do things that just five years ago would scarcely have made sense to us. We tweet along to reality shows; we share videos of strangers dropping cats in bins; we dance in front of Xboxes that can see us, and judge us, and find us sorely lacking. It's hard to think of a single human function that technology hasn't somehow altered, apart perhaps from burping. That's pretty much all we have left. Just yesterday I read a news story about a new video game installed above urinals to stop patrons getting bored: you control it by sloshing your urine stream left and right. Read that back to yourself and ask if you live in a sane society."

Being Human

Being Human is a relatively new offering from BBC Three that I've discovered. The original Being Human pilot first aired on BBC Three in February 2008. It garnered such a positive response that the BBC gave a full series the green light. Series one was shown in 2009 and picks up from where the pilot finished (with some major cast changes). Each episode clocks in at a weighty 57 minutes.

To the outside world three flatmates share a house in Bristol and are regular twenty something year olds. However all is not as it seems.

George (Russell Tovey) is a mild-mannered hospital porter who, for one night a month; is transformed into a flesh-hungry and predatory werewolf. Mitchell (Aidan Turner) is a charismatic vampire who constantly struggles with going cold-turkey from the blood he craves. Annie (Lenora Crichlow) is a ghost desperate for company and is still pining after her boyfriend, whom she was due to marry before her fatal accident.

A werewolf, a ghost and a vampire sharing a house...It sounds like a bad kids TV show but after a few episodes i am absolutely hooked. It's refreshingly well written, tackles a jaded subject from an everyday perspective, isn't afraid to poke fun at itself and features a cracking soundtrack. Plus kudos for the use of prosthetics and animatronics rather than defaulting to CGI.

Series two is due to air in January 2010. In the meantime you can watch and find out more by clicking:

Timspiration!

Are Matt Stone and Trey Parker ( the creators of South Park) fans of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem? Is this where the inspiration for Timmy's catchphrase came from? (see the 0.21, 0.34,0.47 and 1 min mark of The Clancy Brothers clip to see what i'm talking about )

Cheers Padre!

Cup o' tea an' a slice o' cake

Currently distracted and disinterested. Smothered with flu and attempting to comfort myself by watching kids TV on YouTube. One in particular warmed the cockles of me 'art...watching this i regress: aged 5 or 6,sitting in front of my grandmothers fire chewing on a fig roll. Ah bliss...Now i'm off to make a cup of tea

Puppets + Hip Hop= Alligator Boots

Love him or hate him, you have to hand it to Kanye West. He's got his finger in many business pies and the latest venture is “Alligator Boots”.

He has joined forces with Comedy Central (responsible for bringing us South Park, Futurama, The Sarah Silverman programme, Trigger Happy TV and more) to create a show. Tentatively called “Alligator Boots”, one 30 minute pilot has already been produced and if the show is commissioned it would be broadcasting sometime in 2009.
